Anyone who has travelled at all know that one of the most nerve-wracking things about travelling someplace is that things can go wrong- very wrong. And this is even truer (is that even a word) when you are travelling with young children.
And these unexpected speed bumps can cost you time and money, as you exercise every last bit of your patience, ingenuity, stamina, strength, etc.
Despite the challenges that I talk about below, I have never wanted to stop travelling and seeing the world together with my children, where more difficult situations will arise which we will overcome.
1.) PEI: Hand-foot-and-mouth disease. I suspect that my son (who was 2 at the time) contracted this scratchy, burning, itchy, bumpy, crazy mind-bender of a disease, when we had gone to an indoor-playground on a rainy & cold day in Charlottetown (PEI’s capital). A gaggle of daycare kids had just left when we had come in, so, yea. And of course, this contagious viral illness is accompanied by fever, aches and a nasty temper. I contracted this from my son as well and had the worst 4 days of my life! We had even taken our son to the hospital as his fever had spiked and he was barely eating. During the flight back, we covered him up in long sleeves, just so we could get on our flight. Luckily, he slept on my lap the entire way back.
2.) Spain: Where we thought we were going to get kidnapped, which I have written about in my Stranger Danger post.
3.) Turkey: Getting completely lost in the dark in the historic part of Istanbul while looking for our hostel, after we had just stepped off a 10hr international flight. I have written about that in one of my first posts here
4.) Portugal: I will be writing about these in a later post
What were some of your worst experiences & difficult challenges when travelling as a family? Would love to hear and talk about, so please leave comments below.
